Because these types of pads are dense, you must prepare them by tearing, pulling and reducing the thickness by tearing them in half carefully along their horizontal axis. The MiG-29 book in the Kagero "Topshots" series has a photo of the length of the intake from the rear (on page 32 if you have it). It looks to be a light grey, but hard to determine which grey because of the lighting. It seems to have a bluer tint than the underside grey.
