Despite being an avid cyclist for several years, I found the air was light and my energy level dropped below my expectations. Prior to the climb, I had spent about a third of my 3 weeks in Ecuador hiking at high altitudes. Give it a go! If you plan to summit, check out the outfitters in the area for the proper gear.

For those of you who have already been, roughly how cold does it get? girlfriend and I are in Ecuador and want to go Cotopaxi (not summit though, just around 5000m day trip) but don't have winter jackets with us, we have long sleeves, hoodies, light jackets, if we layer up and buy gloves/hats do you think this will suffice?? thanks for your help!

Of course weather can change from day to day so the weather of the day will determine what is sufficient, but in general, your laying up and with hats and gloves available will work fine. The climb to the lodge will warm you from the exertions of the climb. Layering will help keep you from getting sweaty by only wearing what is comfortable and keeping the rest in a day pack.

I don't think that there are guides with 4x4 waiting. We had organized a drive from Quito who took us up to the volcano. On arrival there the vehicle could not go right up so we stopped and we attempted to climb the rest but it was raining and snowing. It was difficult in the cold damp low oxygen mountain. If you are very fit yes you can hike up. there are guides who will take you up but I don't think they have vehicles.
Q:
HI, is the volcano in constant eruption and the snow is that only in winter ? many Thanks
