Police on Thursday announced the arrest of Daren Christopher Abbey, of Basin, Montana, in connection with the death of 35-year-old Belgrade man Dustin Mitchell Kjersem. Investigators described the situation as a “chance encounter” and said Abbey returned to the scene the next day to remove evidence.

A Montana man accused of brutally killing a camper earlier this month was apprehended after DNA on a can of beer linked him to the scene.

DNA from a beer can helped lead the authorities to an arrest in the killing of Dustin Kjersem, whose death was originally reported as a possible bear attack, officials said.
