The holidays are lighting up already. Space weather forecasts have suggested that several states, including parts of New York, may get yet another rare opportunity to view the aurora borealis early this week.

Geomagnetic storm conditions are expected on Saturday night, likely pulling the northern lights further south below the Canadian border, according to a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecast. (Here’s an updated forecast for Sunday night.)

It is “likely” that the Northern Lights could be snapped in Wiltshire’s skies tonight after an amber alert was issued. AuroraWatch UK, a service provided by physicists from Lancaster University, issued an amber alert shortly before 5.

The Northern Lights are caused by the solar wind, a stream of charged particles from the sun interacting with Earth’s magnetic field. As charged particles strike Earth’s magnetic field, they accelerate down its magnetic field lines at the north and south poles to create ovals of green and red.
