The damage survey report from the NWS’ Binghamton office categorizes the tornado as a strong EF2, that is, a tornado with wind speeds between 111 and 135 miles per hour. It is not the first EF2 to hit the area, but most local tornadoes are classified as EF0 or EF1, which are weaker.

Although the National Weather Service is still assessing the storm damage in Rome, the organization reports a probable EF-2 tornado touchdown.
