As crews continue to battle the deadly Palisades Fire in Los Angeles County, the scope of its destruction is coming into focus two days after the massive blaze first ignited.

Tens of thousands have fled their homes as a brush fire in the Pacific Palisades has burned more than 17,200 acres as of Wednesday. Fire crews are actively working to contain the flames and stop any forward progress.

Thousands of residents have been forced to evacuate the Los Angeles area as wildfires continue to tear through the region.

The number of damaged or destroyed structures in the devastating Palisades Fire “is believed to be in the thousands,” Los Angeles City Fire Chief Kristin M. Crowley said during a news conference Thursday morning.

Palisades Fire initially started 10:30 a.m. Jan. 7 in Los Angeles County. It has burned 2,925 acres after being active for 23 hours. By Wednesday morning, the fire crew has managed to contain none of the blaze. However, the cause is still being investigated.
