Prosecutors say De’Lawnte Hardy was trying to evade arrest when he shot Cleveland police officer Jamieson Ritter.

Authorities say a Cleveland police officer has been fatally shot while trying to serve a warrant on the city’s east side.

IMPD public information officer Tommy Thompson told reporters at the scene that police were investigating a previous incident in the area around 3:30 p.m. when officers identified an individual with an active warrant related to a separate case. Officers attempted to approach the individual, who later fled on foot and fired at an officer.
