Barbados, located east of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, although not part of the chain of islands mentioned above, is usually grouped with the Windward Islands. Trinidad and Tobago, geographically an extension of South America, are often considered the southern end of the Windward Islands.

"Take action now to protect your life!" the National Hurricane Center told people in the Windward Islands on Monday morning, as landfall was imminent near the Grenadine Islands and Carriacou Island.

Hurricane Beryl is expected to strengthen as it heads toward the southeast Caribbean and then onwards into the Gulf. NBC News meteorologist Michelle Grossman says it's unusual to see such a strong storm for early in hurricane season.
