WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Florida voters rejected ballot measures Tuesday to protect abortion rights and legalize marijuana, handing victories to Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis and solidifying the state's new reputation as a conservative stronghold.
The state’s winner will receive its 30 electoral votes. Voters in Florida head to the polls on Nov. 5, casting their ballot in the presidential race, a crucial abortion access ballot measure, and several down-ballot contests.
A Florida ballot initiative to protect abortion rights narrowly failed, the first defeat for such a measure since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade two years ago. The proposal, which would have amended the state constitution,
"The legislature doesn't want citizens to go over their head so easily," Ric Keller, a Republican congressman during the 2006 session, said about creating the 60% threshold.
