In July, Israeli air strikes hit a girls’ school in Gaza’s central city of Deir al-Balah, killing at least 30 people sheltering inside. Israel’s military said it targeted a Hamas command centre used to direct attacks against its troops and store “large quantities of weapons”.

Palestinians in northern Gaza are rationing out their last supplies of food to survive, with no aid entering the area for the past month under an Israeli siege.

The strike late Monday hit a home where several displaced families were sheltering in the town of Beit Lahiya, near the border with Israel.
