It took a huge blunder to gift Paris Saint-Germain victory in the first Champions League match of its post-galactico era.

Paris Saint-Germain were grateful to a last-minute howler from goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga as they snatched a 1-0 win over European debutants Girona in their opening game of the new-look Champions League on Wednesday.

Having mostly convinced in league action so far – four wins in four games – Paris Saint-Germain’s first test of the European campaign against Girona came at a time when the customary early-season optimism was at its apex.
