The state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter has begun with services in Washington, D.C. and his hometown of Plains, Georgia. The ceremonies celebrating Carter in D.C. will include a departure ceremony at the Capitol, the National Funeral Service at Washington National Cathedral and a final departure from Joint Base Andrews.

Jimmy Carter was celebrated Thursday for his personal humility and public service before, during and after his presidency during a funeral at Washington National Cathedral featuring the kind of pageantry the 39th U.

The public will be able to pay their respects to the 39th president at the U.S. Capitol until his state funeral Thursday morning.

At his modest ranch home, the 39th president was surrounded by a close knit circle of support of friends and family.
