In 2017, Sacramento leaders made a “Vision Zero” promise to eliminate all traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2027. While the Department of Public Works has executed some safety-enhancing projects, the death toll has continued to rise, and city officials are on track to fail to fulfill that 10-year commitment.

A proposal to declare a state of emergency over pedestrian and cyclist deaths in Sacramento is moving forward.

On Tuesday, a committee of city leaders unanimously voted for city staff to start working on a report to present to the council.

The full Sacramento City Council will now have to review the vote and pass it at a future meeting for it to go into effect.

An emergency declaration in response to the number of pedestrian and bicyclist deaths on Sacramento streets cleared another hurdle and is being prepped for City Council. The city's Law and Legislation Committee voted to move the proposed emergency declaration forward Tuesday.
