In a season in which Vanderbilt upset Alabama, Michigan beat Ohio State, Kentucky beat Ole Miss and Oklahoma best Alabama, Vanderbilt seemed like it may be on the path to pull another when it took an early 14-0 lead on Tennessee Saturday.

The 2024 season won't end that way, even as the Commodores once again got boatraced by their rival yet again. There was hope that Vanderbilt could pull off another stunner as late as the first quarter, when Junior Sherrill took the opening kickoff for a touchdown and then the Commodores forced a fumble.

Nico Iamaleava threw for 257 yards and four touchdowns rallying Tennessee to routing in-state rival Vanderbilt 36-23 Saturday.

Vanderbilt knew they would have their hands full on Saturday when welcoming in Tennessee for this hotly contested rivalry game to close out the regular season.

Vanderbilt (6-6, 3-5) ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown, then forced a fumble on Tennessee's second play from scrimmage, later converting that into a touchdown. But it was mostly Vols for the rest of the first half. Tennessee scored three touchdowns and a field goal, while Vanderbilt got stopped once on fourth down.
